certification

I have been studying for the java programmer certification and I was wondering if it matters which one I go for. The site lists :

Sun Certified Programmer for the Java 2 Platform, Standard Edition 5.0 (CX-310-055) - New!
Sun Certified Programmer for the Java 2 Platform, Standard Edition 5.0 Upgrade Exam (CX-310-056) - New!
Sun Certified Programmer for the Java 2 Platform, Standard Edition 1.4 (CX-310-035)
Sun Certified Programmer for the Java 2 Platform, Standard Edition 1.2 (CX-310-025)
Sun Certified Programmer for the Java 2 Platform, Standard Edition 1.4 Upgrade Exam (CX-310-036)

The topics in the 5.0 are way different from the 1.4. Would it be a waste for me to take the 1.4? Those are the subjects I have been studying for but I wonder if its kind of going backwards.....Would an employer view having the 5.0 over the 1.4 differently? Thanks.

I just took the Java 1.4 one, I don't think it's a waste of time. After all you could upgrade. Also, most businesses are still using 1.4 (Actually most have just started doing that!), and will likely keep using it for a while.

ok good- I would hate to have to start all over with the studying. I am nervous enough about it!

I would take 5.0. Although it is not very common now, it is the latest version which will gradually become a standard. I don't think employers care much. They don't hire people because they have certificates, but because they fit into position. And certificate is simply one of many criterias they cosider.

Maybe I will start with 1.4 just to get one under the belt and then upgrade when ready. Can't hurt to have both!

It would depend on the employer, whether they view having the 5.0 certification as important to them. Where I am, we're quite happy with 1.4, but there will come a time when I need to go up to 5.0.

If you're going to spend time on just one cert, go with 5. Most of us are jealous of anyone with a 5 cert because we're all stuck doing 1.4 (and even 1.3.1 !!!) So just go for it.

Any employer will be pleased with any certs that you have. My certs are 4 years old and they are still opening doors for me. You can be certain that somebody will disparage you for certing on 5 when they because they are on 1.4 or vice versa, but pay no attention to them.

I currently have 1.2 certification :) so don't worry, I'm a jobbing programmer and people are really just interested if you can actually program in a competent manner, personally if i were you i would go for the 1.5 exam as this is the latest and then take an upgrade when 1.6 comes out.

As you may have guessed its a moving target and you will always have to upgrade if you insist on having the most uptodate piece of paper. The fact of the matter is its never been a bar to me getting a job as 1.2 certification prooved I could program java and I then just had to learn the extra bits like generics and the new io stuff etc.

Get yourself a test paper too, study and you'll pass.

I say 1.4

Most development is in 1.4 right now. If you know 1.4 inside and out, 5.0 isn't a big leap.
